Default Considering buying an S3...question on power

First, let me all congratulate you on such a great forum. I have spent extensive time on Porsche forums and clearly you guys are more friendly, civilised and pleasant to read! It's war out there!!

Have always been a P guy (still own a couple) but I bought my wife a new Q7 about a year back and am fascinated by how awesome it is.

Needed a sporty daily drive and fell in love with the shape of the S3 Sedan which somehow reminded me of my first ever car and 1970s Audi 80 (am not that old, the car was lol).

Was going to pull the trigger on a 2017 S3 and got a bit confused with the power numbers. Where I live it develops 292hp and I believe it is the same in the US. For some reason in continental Europe it is rated at 306hp (310PS).

Am I missing something? Is this just for Europe or is it included in the 2018 MY?

Am sure the information is somewhere on the threads and I tried reading many before calling for help without success.

Thanks

Default EU gets higher power generally than ROW

Partly due to 95 octane gas availability

A buddy of mine put his 2017 S3 (USA, stock) on a dyno and got read outs of 309hp (91 octane).

Audi specialist in SoCal says that the 292hp numbers are purposely lowered for USA for insurance and regulation purposes. Numbers are just numbers; you can safely bet you'll get 300-310hp in real life.

17s didn't get the 7th gear in the US either.

Yeah, apparently they delayed it a year for the US and the 18s get it.

Which sucks. Has anyone personally compared the 2017 and 2018 S3? I'm curious about the differences with the transmission.

At the end of the day 10hp on a 300ish horsepower car is so negligible you'd never know the difference anyway. There are so many other factors that could easily have a 10hp effect in the real world. Temperature, Humidity, Fuel Octane, Elevation, etc. I'm half convinced that the underrating of vehicle horsepower is in part to allow for a small advertised horsepower rating bump in subsequent model years, without actually changing anything.

One thing I noticed about the 2017 six speed vs. the 2018 seven speed is not much difference in EPA mileage ratings.
2017: 21/28/24 (city/highway/combined)
2018: 22/28/25 (city/highway/combined)
So 1mpg better for city and combined but nothing for highway?
