Default New to A6 Quattro

New member here. We're considering the acquisition of a year 2000 Audi A6 Quattro. The engine runs but it's not in great shape. One of the turbos has a loose shaft and the engine shows other signs of wear. Ditto for the clutch. The interior is okay, the body has a few dings without any rust and the engine does run but the suspension doesn't feels so great. The car has ~150K miles on it and the timing belt was changed at 117K by owner. The car has been owner maintained since 2006. We would only buy this car if we could wrench it. What specialized tools will someone likely need to overhaul this car and get it ship shape?

Sound off on what you would pay for this car in the description above?

Sounds like a $1000 to 1500 car to me. You will have to remove the engine to replace the turbos (which should be replaced in pairs.)

I did my own clutch (2001 A6 2.7T 6MT) on jackstands in my driveway a couple of years ago. Total cost, $175 plus 20 hours of labor spread over six weeks. The bottom bolts on the bell housing will drive you to drink.

My only special tools are VCDS, cam locking bar, lots of triple square sockets and all the metric tools. And lots of patience for sealing valve cover gaskets!!!

My thinking is closer to $1000 than $1500. To do the work that george mentioned will cost you enough that you could buy a better car to begin with. I would suspect you could find a slightly newer car, say an '03 or '04 for around $3-4000 that may not need so much work. The turbos will not be cheap. Unless you are buying a hobby, look for another deal on Craigs List, etc. They are great cars but expensive to repair and maintain.

I'm a fan of this car too but I agree with @Harleyguy, there are better options for a home wrencher especially if you don't want to spend half your time keeping it running. The complexity of this car leaves lots of opportunites for suboptimal repairs and the fact that this was owner maintained for more than ten years would scare me off.

@georgeb944
That was an inspiring post and a good heads up on the cam locking bar (>$100 by itself!). Why are the valve cover gaskets such a problem? I'm not so familiar with these cars but it's trivial to create protrusions (drill and pin) to guide the fit on most engines without them, Where do I get a breakdown on the key differences of the "A" and "S" nomenclature and what changed in the C6 compared to the C5? Is the "C" designation short for chassis?

@georgeb944
Thanks, that helped. Is there any reason you can't put RS6 parts on an A6?

Yes, there are significant differences which would preclude some parts being fitted. I have never been involved in that kind of effort, so have no more information than knowing that, if it was easy, everybody would be doing it (and not many are.)
