Transmission and Cylinder Head Problem
New here. I am the original owner of an A4 Cabriolet, 2.0, 2009, 110K miles.
Since it's been off warranty/extended warranty, beyond normal wear and tear repairs like brakes and tires, I've paid to replace the timing belt (last year), an exhaust pipe piece, and the cloth top and window (November 2018), and a part of the top mechanism . Under warranty, other parts of the top mechanism were replaced and it failed an oil consumption test under warranty and Audi replaced all the pistons and rings.
Now - at 10 years and 110K miles, the transmission needs to be rebuilt ($4500) probably now (can go short distances still, but don't want to chance it). And the cylinder head as well (loosing coolant) for another $2800, although I'm told if I want to space out the expense, I could wait a bit on that and watch the fluid level.
I'm trying to decide what to do. I love my car and can't afford to replace it with a new A5 convertible. I can't really afford any car payment right now, but if it's better than throwing money into this car, I will have to figure it out. I've been looking at used A5's - 3 years old - 35K miles or less, but I'm really hesitant to buy a used car. There's nothing else on the market new I really have any interest in driving...and I don't want to give up having a convertible if at all possible.
I'm looking for some knowledgable input. On the one hand, with the right maintenance, the car will go to 200K. But if I end up paying as much to get it to that point as I would to get a new/new to me car...then it doesn't make sense at all. That's not a logical way to go then.
That's really question. Does it still make sense to fix this car...or is it time so look at replacing it?
TIA for input/advice.
Lola
