Default Having problems with remote programming - some questions about the procedure

Background-one remote stopped working a few months ago, now second stopped working so bought four batteries to replace.Posted a thread about procedure and also did search. Couple ? about procedure.
1."Ignition switch to ON" - does this mean the engine is on or is it just the first click or is it the click in which all the dashboard lights are on?
2. "Lock doors mechanically with second key" I might be wrong but my doors don't seem to want to lock when the other key is in the ignition. Does that make sense.
3. "Press OPEN on fob once - horn will beep". Horn does not beep but that is probably because I cannot get the door to lock.
Also, is this a two person job. Ex. does the driver side door need to be closed and locked by someone else while you are in the driver seat playing with the fob in the ignition switch.
Is this something that a VW dealer could do for an Audi A4. Nearest Audi dealer is 35 miles, Audi dealer is 3 miles? I feel like an idiot since I am probably missing something simple but this is becoming very frustrating. Thanks for your time and help on this simple but irritating issue.

Default i've never gotten the procedure to work..but two times now...

i've simply driven around with the non-programmed key for awhile. every once and awhile i'd try the remote on the key, and after a few days, it starts working on its own.

Default took me 30 seconds last week...

put new batteries in the remote
take your spare key, put it in the ignition, and turn it one click... the car is not running, just in the "on" position.
get out of the car, close the door, and lock it manually with the key you want to program.
the car is now on, and you are locked out with your unprogrammed key in the locked door.
press unlock once... horn dosnt beep, the lights just blink once.
manually unlock the door
manually lock the door
manually unlock the door
pull the key out of the lock
get in your car
take the other key out of the ignition
get out of the car again and now try your newly programmed key, it should work.

this really took me only 30 seconds and one try. it should work for you.

Your step 4 is kind of misleading - "...the car is now on..."

Default ...but not running...

ignition is in the "on" position... all electronics are on, but engine is not running.

Default I programmed two key's last week, had to clear all the key's first though. *instructions*

The step that took two tries to figure out was the memory positions. When you hit the lock button it needs to be within 4 (5?) seconds of the manual lock in order to find the NEXT free memory position. PITA to figure that part out but I had both FOB's programmed in under 2 minutes.

Use the below to clear ALL previous key's and then program in the new one & existing one.
-----------------------------------------------

Looks like you don't even need a VAG tool. Just skip over the part that talks about checking the memory positions.

===

Remote transmitter, coding

Two remote transmitters are supplied with the vehicle. If further transmitters are required, they must be coded
to interact properly with the central locking control module.

Remote transmitter coding procedure

- Switch ignition on (using separate key).

- Check how many transmitters have already been coded in measuring value block 003 Read Measuring Value Block page 01-86 .

Display field 2 indicates how many remote transmitters have been coded and in which memory positions
(in the example given, 1 transmitter in position 1).

- Lock vehicle from outside using key to be coded via driver-side door lock.

- Press "unlock" button within 5 seconds often enough to reach next memory position (in example given, twice).

- Every press of the button is confirmed by the emergency flashers and the anti-theft system horn.

- Wait 5 seconds.

- Now press "unlock" button one more time (vehicle unlocks).

- Switch ignition off and remove ignition key.

- Check function of new transmitter.

- Check display field 2 in measuring value block 003. It should now display another "1" (in example given: 1100).

Notes:

Be sure that new transmitters are always coded into free memory positions. If occupied positions (distinguishable by a "1")
are used, the transmitter previously coded to this position will no longer work.

Existing remote transmitter recoding procedure

- Press any button on transmitter.

If vehicle does not respond by locking or unlocking:

- Lock and unlock vehicle within 30 seconds using driver-side lock.

- Now check function of recoded remote transmitter.

Clearing memory positions

Notes:

It is possible to clear all memory positions, e.g. if a customer loses a remote transmitter. Proceed as follows:

- Switch ignition on using key.

- Then mechanically lock central locking from outside vehicle using key.

- Activate remote transmitter "unlock" button on key five times at one second intervals. A short horn signal will sound each time.

- Then, after 6 seconds, press remote transmitter "unlock" button to confirm this clearing procedure one more time.

- Central locking should no longer unlock itself via remote transmitter.

- Switch ignition off.

Up to four transmitters can now be coded again.

Default Re: Having problems with remote programming - some questions about the procedure

Thoth, did you happen to figure out how to lock the door manually? I just ran into the same issue, and would hate to be locked out of the car with my only good key in the ignition .

I know this is several months later, but I thought I'd ask anyway.
