2013 A8L 4.0 Power Steering Pump Replacement
Long time subscriber first time poster....
Wondering about the cost for replacing the power steering pump. I'm waiting on the estimate from my local (and trusted) independent Audi shop, but from what I have been able to ascertain I am not going to like what I hear. Apparently, the subframe has to be lowered and a motor mount has to be removed to provide sufficient access to R/R the pump. Time estimates seem to be from 8-10 hours of labor plus ~$1,200 for the pump....is this correct? I suspected the pump was the issue when I brought it in and so I did a scan beforehand (which did not indicate any electrical or ABS issues). Thoughts on the price and anything else that should be checked?
Thanks!
That price sounds about reasonable given an average labor rate at indy shops of $120+. I wouldn't skimp on the pump, definitely buy one new, but you could also look around for OEM suppliers selling them for much cheaper than Audi. One trick I've learned is to check multiple dealerships in your area on the audi parts website...you'll be astonished at the difference in prices. I personally buy parts from Audi Shrewsbury (in Massachusetts) even though I haven't lived there for several years. They offer the cheapest parts prices BY FAR.
Check the steering rack for leaks before you replace the pump. If you're replacing the pump, you might as well also replace the rack and check all the lines. Its a "while you're there" job and those components have a similar shelf life. When I did this job on my 2008 S8, I purchased a pump from an OEM supplier and a rebuilt steering rack from Detroit Axle. They have a great warranty and the prices are fantastic.
Find parts diagram from 2013 D4 4.0T when it was still pump/hydraulic I don't recall if they got back to belt drive, or it was one of the splined shaft drive types with yet more pain in butt labor steps.
