Default Broke Lower Rear Brake Carrier Bolt Trying to Remove

2013 Q5 Premium Plus

This morning I broke the lower rear brake carrier bolt trying to remove it so that I could change rotors and pads. I had done this job a few years ago and remembered that the lower bolt was hard to remove. This time the head broke off. My only option now may be to take it in to a shop to have them remove the broken bolt. Anyone know what the part numbers are for the rear carrier bolts?

Thanks, yes those are the bolts. Any suggestions on how to get the broken one out? I stopped when it broke so not sure if I can still pull the carrier off and drill out the broken bolt.

This is what I would do. Remove the other bolt and the caliper bracket. Buy suitable left handed bolt extractor. You need to drill the broken bolt carefully not hitting the threads. Left handed bolt extractor will go in hole and remove the broken bolt. Use lots of frozen bolt lube before the extraction.

If that doesn't work, keep enlarging the hole and eventually it will loosen. If you need to clean up the thread, there are thread chasers to do that.

Thanks, appreciate the suggestion. My only concern is that there is very little room to get a drill in there to drill it from the back side. If I could get the rotor off I could possibly access the back end of the bolt and drill all the way through. Not sure the caliper carrier will come off as the bolts are threaded the full length.

When the other bolt is removed, the caliber carrier should be removable. Then you can drill out the broken bolt from the removed carrier. Study the above diagram.

Unfortunately, the bolt broke, but taking it to a shop is a good option to have the broken bolt extracted safely. As for the rear carrier bolt part numbers, they vary depending on the make and model of your vehicle. You can typically find the part numbers in the service manual, by searching online using your vehicle's make, model, and year, or by contacting the dealership or a local auto parts store. If you share your vehicle details, I can help narrow it down for you!

Thanks, fixed this back when the post was made in October. I ended up going to a local dealer for the replacement bolts and bought a used carrier online for $25.00.
