Default Audi enthusiest/tech in NC

Curious if there are any techs that super understand Audis and VCDS close to Hendersonville North Carolina, that would be interested and willing to come check my car before committing to a complete motor swap with local shop?
Many of you brought valid points and ideas for help in a previous thread for ECS and TPMS and shaking and I greatly appreciate it! I have followed the advice as best I can, but I am not a professional mechanic and I don't have a garage and in-climate weather,(yall know) so it makes it super tough. Maybe I am just doomed to the inevitable? But I always remain hopeful! Many still believe its rings sticking (known issue) especially with heavy oil consumption, and I prayed y'all were right on, but I have not found a solution yet and losing hope of saving this motor

I'll try to give all the most accurate information possible

2015 3.0 TFSI, 172,000 miles, Oil consumption started just after having PCV changed and was no better with typical flushes at service, but motor ran good, slight noticeable loss of power, only coming up the mountain, which is where this dilemma started!
I limped 10 miles home after dark with no headlights (failed at exact moment the motor/car started shaking, ECS, TPMS lights started flashing. Luckily, I still had fog/driving lights!

Work done by local shop to resolve this issue:
Found misfire on #5, spark plug tip missing and oil present
Replace plugs and coils
Scope shows oil in cylinder
Compression test - #5, 30lbs and #4, 90lbs
Walnut blast valves
Compression #5 went to 60 lbs, Which makes me ponder
Leak down test failed,
#4 at 93%
#5 at 30%
found air coming through dipstick tube.
Shop claims the cylinder wall has damage, slight scoring in wall (discovered after blasting), Possible broken rings?

Being hopeful, I have personally done:
B12 piston soak(sat 3 days before evacuating)
EPR flush for much longer than recommended(hoping rings would start slapping properly again)
Oil change to Valvoline restore and protect (have not gotten to run it that much since, 6 miles?) and checked all fuses

A few modules will not clear faults for nothing, still! I clear the specific module fault, back out and reenter and the fault has returned.
I had a steering sensor fault, which I managed to resolve and clear myself

Here is the current scan log since driven with new oil.
Never mind the door codes, will be fixed after everything else is resolved.

Also, here are images they sent of cylinders #4 and #5

Thank you in advance!

You've stated the "heavy" oil consumption problem began right when you got it back from a repair shop you hired to replace the PCV valve on it. You also just mentioned finding an air leak at the dipstick tube, which likely correlates with the car now having a bad/failed PCV (extreme vacuum builds inside the crankcase), etc. The whole point of the PCV is to vent pressure/gases from the crankcase that builds up from pumping losses and combustion blow-by.

What I'm not seeing is that this issue with the extreme oil consumption post-PCV swap was ever managed/resolved/returned to that shop, etc., so that issue continues, correct? That's a huge outstanding problem.

Looking at known symptoms from a failed PCV...it throws fuel/air mixture off resulting in...poor performance, rough idle, misfires. Heavy oil consumption is very typical of a failed/stuck PCV (oil separator) valve.

Here's a dedicated thread on the PCV failures/symptoms impacting the 3.0T engines, as general reference.: https://www.audiworld.com/forums/q7-...d-pcv-3023758/

There's simply no way to go forward unless you resolve that PCV issue first, and even then who knows. There are diagnostics for a failed PCV, in addition to the myriad symptoms they can show you.

Thanks for this, I realize how negligent I was in correcting the PCV issue, and I reached out to the shop to inform them of this. Hoping I can find resolve without engine swapping, although they seem very determined to get at it.
I actually sent your exact quote, see how they respond. I will contact the original shop and inquire their thoughts on Monday! Or Tuesday, because of the holiday.
As always, I appreciate the information!

Alright, I disconnected the negative cable (assuming that is all I needed to?) for over an hour. Reconnected and ran VCDS immediately, faults still there.

Hendersonville... that's over by Asheville, correct? I guess the horrific rains/flooding spared you further south! I was driving home from my brother's place in Jacksonville that weekend, and I ended up getting off of 40 just shy of where they had it shut down due to the effects of weather. Anyhow, I'm not that tech. LOL

Even if this is a broken ring situation, I don't see why you couldn't drop the crank and replace that piston in lieu of swapping the engine. Perhaps it would be more expensive than just switching a used block? I don't know, but at least you would know what you have in there going forward. There may be other issues going on, but if you cannot get that cylinder to hold soaks like the others do, then there is definitely a physical issue with those rings that will need addressing at some point.

Yes, we specifically were spared, a little water in the basement, trees down, no power for a week, lost some food, but all ok.Surrounding us was really bad like a war zone, but nothing like surrounding areas, from Lake Lure, Chimney Rock and Bat cave, which are completely gone, to Asheville, Swannanoa and Black Mountain, about the same, and further north. I have driven all over delivering supplies with old girl Q and it served me very well and I miss it.

Yes, swapping long blocks seems cheaper according to mechanics, especially if the cylinder is jacked. Even a full motor swap? I would not know the condition of other parts like the PCV specifically.

Either way, why can I NOT get the computer reset? It should reset, clear the faults and show such before turning the car on. I understand it would most likely trip again, but it should clear, period. And it doesn't, leading me to believe there is another issue prior to the misfire. Like I stated, it took my headlights out at the same time, and I don't really believe in coincidences anymore.

Anyway, thanks for all the help!

UPDATE:
I disconnected the negative cable
I disconnected the positive cable
I clamped positive and negative cable together and left
Came back 1 hour later and reconnected the battery, car made a lot of cachunkcachunk sounds re-establishing connection
I turned on the key
Connected PC/ VCDS program
I noticed clock and tripometer were reset to factory 2013, meaning it worked and cleared, right?
I ran a test/save/scan first thing to see if everything was cleared, no change in the modules, still have faults stored. Should this not have cleared all modules like the mechanics say it should? Would this now be an ECM issue, or a short? 🤔
I didn't bother starting the car, as it will continue to say the motor is bad.

I know the door handles are shorted, disregard that, please.

UPDATE:
So the shop I am dealing with tells me this : If you tried clearing each individual module independently, then they are likely permanent codes. They likely would go away after a drive cycle or two once the problem is remedied. I would not suspect a computer issue at this time.

Additionally, try clearing the faults with the hood open.

What are your thoughts?

Hello. to remove some faults, You need to disconnect the positive and negative cables, then clamp them together for 10-15 minutes. Turn on your radio, head lights to remove any power left on the system. Then after 10-15 minutes, reconnect the cables, this should have cleared all codes. This I learned doing it on my BMW and other German cars I owned in the pass. Good luck, hope this helps.

After much research, and doing all that, it is apparent that the stored are permanent, meaning, I would have to drive so much before the car realizes the repair was made and lets go, resets.
At this point, I am waiting for another engine to swap out.
What a pickle!
