Engine rattle at idle and when accelerating
I purchased an Audi A4, 1.8 liter ADR engine (1996) from a friend. It has approximately 120k miles on the clock. It is a nice car to drive but I keep getting so annoyed listening to a noise/rattle it is producing. It is evident when cold at idle then it warms up and goes away. It comes back if the engine is suddenly accelerated or when driven under load. If the engine is kept at constant speed you will not hear a thing. This noise rattle is hard to describe, its a bit like a learner driver has engaged an incorrect gear (tin rattle). Initially I thought it is comming from the exhaust manifold to the down pipe joint. I installed a new gasket but that didn't make a difference. The catalytic converter is new and so is the exhaust. Has anybody out there experienced the same problem? Is it a heat shield? Would the automatic camshaft adjuster produce such rattle?

Re: I dont know much about the non turbo 1.8 but it sounds like an oil pressure issue...
I would be supprised if it is an oil pressure issue since I have never seen the dashboard light come on. However, I have seen traces of oil leaking on top of the gearbox / subframe but have never been able to find the source
Does the sludge accumulate in the pump or in the engine galleries?
If it was sludge wouldn't it desolve over long trips when the engine temperature remains high for a long period of time?
If it is the oil pump is it just a case of taking it appart and cleaning it or is the damage usually permanent?
What are your thoughts?
