Car won't start...need help
98.5Q 2.8
Mine went bad and the same thing happened... driving along without problems, car shuts off and just cranks.
I had just filled up that day and replacing the fuel pump with a full tank of cold gas wasn't fun. Not a hard job, just not fun.
IIRC i had to borrow a specific tool to get the thing out. Manual calls for two specific tools but you can remove that huge ring with a mallet and screw driver. If you do have to replace it, double check the wire to the fuel level sensor and / or replace it. I think there is a write-up somewhere on fixing it. Soon after I replaced my fuel pump, that little thin wire broke and my gauge was intermittent, I had to dig into the tank again.
I had no CEL or warning when it went. It works fine one second and bad the next. I do remember that it went bad after running the tank VERY low and then filling up. It happened within the next 20 miles from fueling.
Sorry like I said my memory isn't the best. I don't think I had any codes and I don't think the VAG was of any help diagnosing. I think if you put your ear to the access hole you should hear it kick on a few secs to prime the system as soon as you turn the key to the ACC (just before cranking)
