Can you make a claim against the Dept. of Transportation for wheel damage?
My fronts were damaged from a nasty hole. Only driving about 35mph. The passenger side was annihilated, the driver side just scratched. Question is, can they be held responsible for the damage?
And, does anyone have 1or2 stock S4 wheels for sale?

Sure, faulty roadway - beyond a tolerable level.
I can understand (not agree with) bad roads to an extent. Bumps, man holes, patches, dips, etc, but to drive 'normal' and have a hole that destroys a wheel, is NOT TOLERABLE. We live with this every where in Colorado.

I've heard of someone who got mailed a check for this.
I think I emailed w/ him, I can't recall though.

I got them to pay for a flat tire and dented rim. (Details inside.)
When I lived in a small town in Pensylvania, north of Pitsburgh (about 4 years ago), there was one of those large metal plates coving up a large hole in the road where they had been working. A car quite a distance in front of me all of a sudden hit its brakes and pulled off with a "flat tire limp". I slowed down just in time to see a corner of this cockeyed piece of metal sticking up. Bamm, clunk, zoweee, Holy cow batman!!@#(I guess I'm showing my age.) Now, there were 2 cars with flats off to the side of the road. Minutes later local police helped me change my flat. I could have done it but I had just gone grocery shopping and had a screeming 1 year old in the back (My wife was laid up with a broken ankle.) The police filed a report and radioed for road repair to come right away before a more serious accident occured.) I got $160 for a nearly bald tire and a 12 year old Toyota Corolla rim which was slightly dented.

I tried and got the runaround... but others have had success...
On my previous car- a 98 grand prix, I had to drive through a friggin' mine field every day because a road near my house was totally wrecked... I complained many times to the IDOT, and to no avail... finally, as I had predicted would eventually happen, I dented a rim. I tried to get them to pay for it, they said "that is a frontage road and it's not our responsibility" so I tried to go to the local dept. of trans, and they just gave me the runaround... basically saying, tuff ****.
However, I've heard of other people getting reimbursed in the winter when the snow plows and salt tear big pot holes in the road...

I think it depends where you live and how lucky you are.
My sister recovered the cost of three wheels from a contractor who did some highway repair in Maryland (I-95). That was because the road had a 90 degree concrete cutoff that was higher that 2 inches. If it wasn't more than 2", then tough luck. The contractors were "negligent" because they're not supposed to leave any road variations higher than 2 inches (probably written in the contract somewhere).
I'm in a situation trying to recoop the cost for two bent wheels from a faultly asphalt patch. I'm still trying to track down the contractor or utility company that did the work.
As for potholes from winter here in DC or MD, the local government can only be held liable if they were made aware of the pothole but were slow in repairing it. They are given a reasonable amount of time to repair it.<p>Andrew Lee
