Basic all season tires for 97 A6?
I need a recommendation for not-too-fancy all season tires for my 1997 A6 Quattro. I live in Detroit, and winter is approaching, so I need tires that will behave in those kinds of conditions. I also have no intention of getting new tires when winter is over.

Consumer Reports liked Michelin Energy MXV4 the best, Dunlop D60 second
but the Michelins are much more expensive. (By the way, I think each of these models has been superseded by a new and improved version since the CR test.) Note that these tires are not "high performance" all seasons -- they are "touring" all seasons, so the ride will be quiet and smooth but at the expense of a little handling firmness. Dunlop SP 5000s seem to be the consensus pick for high performance all seasons round here.
