Any problems noticed going from 205/50 to 225/55 ????
I have. On my 98 A4 Avant Q I went from stock Eagle RSA 205/55 16 to a wider Dunlop SP5000 225/50 16 and have noticed a tremendous difference. Whenever there are any ruts in the road, like the kind that trucks have worn into the pavement (mostly when approaching stop lights or signs, the car will pull drematically one way or another. I feel the tires are too wide for the rim.
I also hear and feel every pump in the road. I wish I had the originals back,
Anyone want to buy these at a reduced price. The tires hadle great and all, but this is not what I should have purchased for this car. This is really bugging me.
What do you all think about this?

What you refer to as "problems" others would call "feedback" ...
... and yes, wandering (tires tracking in ruts), increased noise, and a bit firmer ride are biproducts of that increased feedback. Such are the tradeoffs for slightly better handling.

Would I have the same problem if the tires/rims are proportional?....
If I go with 17" rims and put on the recommended tire size for 17", would the "wandering rut" syndrome go away. Or will the "wandering rut" syndrome stay no matter what when using wider tires. My tire /rim doesn't seem proportional, like the tires are too wide for the rim causing this wandering.

Wider tires like to follow the grooves in the road
You won't solve that problem with 17" rims. As Rob O mentions, it's all a trade off. Though, for your feels-too-rough problem, double check your tire pressures. You may be running to much (of course, do this with caution, you don't want to underinflate, either).
