Default Sport tires during winter storms

We are in a rare situation with weather and we will be getting snow and ice this weekend. It is not feasible for snows but I will still need to be driving around. I have heard the horror stories with the SP8000s and I am wondering if they will still be ok if I drive sanely.
Thanks,
Greg Davis

Default very slick

You will have to drive very slowly. Even with AWD, you will be one of the least stable cars on the road on snow, and I wouldn't even come near ice.

Your use of the word "sanely" implies you think that performance tires merely cease to be performance tires on snow and drop down to regular handling levels. This is far from true. You will have a rough time of it.

Of course, if you have no other choice, what can you do?

Default Agreed...

I just replace my worn RS-A all-seasons with a set of used SP8000 in preparation for selling my '96 A4Q. The SP8000s have at least half their tread left while the RS-As were almost down to the wear marks. Yet, while neither is ideal for winter driving, the car got a lot scarier on packed snow with the SP8000s on. My driveway (hill) had patches of tire-packed snow on it, and this morning the A4 got pretty sideways backing down. The RS-As, even with so little tread left, never behaved quite that badly.

I think it's the compound; the SP8000s give the impression, when it's really cold out, that they're made out of bowling *****. They seem great otherwise, but no fun on snow and hockey pucks on ice.
