just touched the caliper so I thought the extra 15mm of offset would give plenty of clearance?

I have just used the offset calculator and it comes up as an extra 44mm ....
extra protrusion of the outer edge of the rim, so I see what you mean, they would stick out by about an 25mm outside the wheel arch - not exactly the sedate image to suit an avant!
