Default All-seasons needed for my truck. Narrowed it down to these two...

Pirelli Scorpion Zero Asimetrico

Toyo Proxes S/T

Which of these two would fair better through winters in Chicago and through light snow? I know some of you are going to say "why not go with a winter tire?" and I've definitely considered that, but the fact that 295/40/20 Scorpion Ice & Snows are now sold out for the season made my decision to go with all-seasons (and be done with it) for all-year use much easier. Besides, it really doesn't snow much in Chicago and when it does, the roads are well-maintained by traffic and snow plows+salt trucks.

I've read mixed reviews with the Proxes S/T especially with regards to driving in the snow but most of the reviews of the Scorpion Zero Asimetricos seem positive. I am fully aware that both tires are a compromise when it comes to winter driving so I just want to cut my losses by going with which would fair better in such less-than-ideal conditions. Oh and I may have to drive with these to upstate NY (where it can snow a lot) and back for the holidays.

Thanks!

I don't carry Toyo so I can't say for sure, but tires we carry that look like that haven't done very well in the snow. We have had good feedback on the Pirelli.

Tires

Default Gary, question...

My ML63 came with Conti Crosscontact UHP's from the factory and according to tirerack's site, it is a summer UHP tire. However, my dealer insists that if anything, based on the tread design and the tire's name "crosscontact", they are safe for all-year use even on light snow. They go on to say that "Mercedes-Benz isn't the kind of car company that would put tires on an SUV that can't be driven throughout the year." Looking at the tread of the Crosscontact and the amount of siping on it (very comparable to the Pirelli scorpion Zero asims), I'm almost convinced that this might be the case but then I also suspect that the Crosscontact UHP uses a summer-only compound that would definitely not be safe for winter use. Is the Pirelli going to be a much wiser choice coming from CrossContacts or will I just be switching to about the same level of winter capability. What do you think?

Also, I noticed that the Scorpion Zeros 295/40/20 are also "Mercedes OEM" tires but virtually every single ML63 I've seen and every single ML63 owner I've surveyed on the forums all have the CrossContacts on their cars. This leads me to think that perhaps Mercedes actually thinks the Continentals are the better overall tire for all-year use in the US market.

He's using fuzzy logic. Trying to eyeball a tread pattern or make assumptions based on the tires name isn't the best way to determine a tires all season capability. The compound on this tire is not designed for cold weather use and is indeed a summer-only tire. MBZ, BMW, Porsche and others put summer tires on some of their top tier SUVs.
