Non-Flashing Check Engine (MIL) *CAN* be a big deal
I had a non-flashing MIL and drove a mere 60 some miles until I had it corrected at my dealer in Denver. Well I had an injector replaced, and after checking the oil today, it's LOW (I need to add a quart), and the big problem is that it reeks of fuel and definitely needs to be changed. So this necessitates yet another trip to the dealer.<p>So it's not always the case that the non-flashing MIL is not a big deal. Even a non-lit MIL can be a big deal, for that matter
For some problems, the light doesn't even come on. For example, a misfire. If some of these types of problems happen enough times, the light comes on. So, it is possible for the ECU to detect a big problem, especially the beginnings of one, long before it tells you about it. (The reason the light doesn't come on, necessarily, is that the problem isn't necessarily severe, and the system wants to verify it is "real" before sounding the alarm). And, of course, the ECU doesn't even keep track of lots of things that can be problems. It can't watch carbon buildup on the valves, for example, and it won't tell you if your engine mounts are about to rust through. Unfortunately, it DOES track lots of things that most of us wish it didn't track, like the fuel tank pressure, which can cause a light if the gas cap isn't screwed on right.

<br>Actually I don't mind the fuel cap. I've been used to the environmentally friendly (supposedly) fuel cap that clicks for a while; and the proper way to put it back on it until it clicks.
