I'm negotiating for an A41.8t w/quattro, the dealer is being very evasive around the impact of the chip on the warranty?
can anyone give me some real facts??

Default Fact

If something goes wrong with your cars drivetrain, and if the dealer chooses to claim that your chip caused it...you most likely would be screwed. However, the chances are very slim that something will go wrong, as reported on this bbs, so the situation of the dealer doing this would be very slim. However, they CAN. No US dealer in their right mind is gonna say "Sure go chip the thing!". If that is what you are looking for ....stop looking. If you want to see some info on chipping and warranties...go to the TAP site and hear their opinion. http://www.tap1.com
In other countries it is different....like in Australia...the dealer will install the chip for you. :-)
Steve S.
97 2.8QM

I've got a Wett 1.0 bar chip in my '97 A4 1.8T. I'm not worried about voiding the warranty as I swap the stock chip back in prior to taking it into the dealer for service...they're none the wiser. That's one of the big pluses (as far as I'm concerned) with the Wett chip.

Default That is slick!

I have yet to chip my 99' 1.8Tqms and, obviously, will have to decide which to go with...Wett, TAP, Hoppen. The fact that you can remove the Wett and place the stock chip back in that easily, is really amazing about the Wett chip!
JT

Just keep in mind that the Wett socket is visible if inspected by dealer.

True, but it is highly unlikely that a dealer would open the ECU...they may replace it, if it were found to be faulty, but I doubt they would open it up.

Default See the "Brain Transplant" post from Adam T., above for some insight

Adam's recent experience can be the reality of the situation.
Many have posted in the past that if you have a drivetrain or ECU problem, that "the dealer has to PROVE that your modification caused the problem in order to deny warranty coverage". Well, he doesn't have to prove anything. He just has to say that Audi isn't going to pay, and then it's your problem. You can choose to fight it however you want (court, or whatever), but the reality seems to be "guilty until proven innocent". And this isn't anything that is unique to Audi, by the way.
It is true, though, that different dealers handle these things in different ways. You can talk to your dealer to see what they say beforehand, as it sounds like you tried to do, but unless it is in writing, it isn't worth much.

Five minutes... nine screws and a clip - off and back on...
