Default Requires Software

Unless you have the right tools/software (and you obviously don't if you're asking), this is a dealer-only thing. (Or an independent shop with OBD-II scanner, which all good ones should have by now). Software that works on a laptop is available (VW-Tools, VDS-PRO, probably others) for about $400 - $800 or so, not sure about the current prices but it's up there somewhere). The scanner boxes that VW/Audi dealers use cost from $1500 on up and you can buy those too. All of the above will allow you to see what codes are stored, reset them, code your own remote locking functions, etc. In addition to working with the engine electronics, they check the climate control system, instrument panel, auto. trans., alarm system, and just about everything else electronic in the car. The generic OBDII scanners that most independent shop have will reset the trouble light for the engine, but won't interface with the other systems on your car.<p>It isn't just a simple shorting of a wire somewhere, or pushing of a button to reset the code/light. Even if it were, just resetting it wouldn't tell you what code(s) is stored, and therefore what, if anything, needs to be fixed, which is something that you or your dealer may also need to know.
