Default Two basic questions on the 30v 2.8 engine...

1) Is it normal for the 2.8 to 'roar' to life on cold startup? The engine starts at a high rpm rate and then instantly falls to a normal idle - as if starting it with the gas mashed. (My guess is that its normal, and just a little strange.)

2) Is the oil filter readily accessible from the underside, and where is it? I want to install a magnetic strap to help reduce the break-in shavings floating around. I took a quick peek and didnt see it since I cant fit under the car.

Default That idle sounds kinda normal....

When it's cold I think mine idles around 1700rpm, but drops to normal(~900) after about 30 sec. Depending on the outside temp the idle my drop in a few sec. It takes about 30sec in 15-20F temps.

The filter is accessible, but you need to remove the cover underneath the engine. To do this you will need to get car up on ramps or jack stands. I don't think you can reach from top.

It is normal for the cold start rpm to be higher than at warm idle. How high does yours get? My A4 reaches a little above 2000 rpm before settling down to around 1000 rpm and then slowly retreats to the 700-800 range as the engine reaches operating temperature.

How steady is the warm idle on your A4? Mine has a tendency to 'wander' as much as 100 rpm.

The oil filter is easy to reach once you have removed the plastic belly pan under the engine. Undo about 6 fasteners, IIRC, holding the pan to the chassis and remove the pan. The filter is on the front left hand (driver's side in Nth America) of the engine. It helps to have the front of the car raised at least a few inches.

Default Excellent! I will have to check how high it gets...

...but 2000 sounds about right for the initial 'roar'.

The oil filter sounds like a real pain, but I think its worth the trouble to throw the strap onto it.

Thanks for the info!

Taking off the underpan is _not_ really that bad. The fasteners are all large and require only a half-turn or so to disengage.
