Default '01 Electrical Problem - HELP PLEASE

I hear this is a rather common thing...

I have an '01 225 Coupe. Currently, the car will not start and I just installed a new battery a few months ago. When I turn the key I do not hear the common clicking sound associated with a dead battery AND this weekend while driving both the RPM and MPH guage dropped to zero and the radio cut out for a few seconds before coming back to life.

Please Help!!! The dealer thinks I may need a new cluster but what would cause the car not to start? I can't even turn on the radio as if the power is completely gone and I had to use the key to enter the car instad of the remote.

Thanks!

Neil

Default Just a guess but if you have an 01 with the immobilizer the dead cluster

might be causing the immobilizer to trip.

The immbobilizer is part of the factory alarm, it was added partway thru the MY2001 production

Is it true that the "w" on my key indicates I have an immobilizer?

Default also recheck your battery>>>

just cause it is new, does not mean it is not a problem. Newer batteries fail too..check the voltage with a voltmeter...anything below 12.4 from the posts, and the battery is shot!

All of the symptoms you describe sound like a battery to me...IMO

Default Don't know about the "w" but you can tell by... >

...looking at your cluster. Turn the ignition key to ON--the idiot lights will come on, then look for a yellow icon with a small key within the outline of a car (or something like that... I can't actually remember what the outline is). That little key is the immobilizer icon. If you've got one, your car has the immobillizer built into the cluster.

FWIW, when I've tried to start my immobilzer-equipped 2001 with a non-coded key, the engine starts up normally, but then dies after a second or two. My guess is that you've got a battery or other electrical problem (also check those main fuses that sit atop the battery box... make sure the 10mm bolts on each end are snugged down).

I'd also clean your terminals while your checking everything - Both the cars and the batteries

Default Had the same to happen to me. An Optima battery went dead in 1 month. I swore it could not be the

battery, but it was. Batteries are relatively cheap. Pull yours, take it to Autozone and let them load test it.
