04 TT 3.2 Code/Number

Golf-sized cars inhabit the "A" size segment in Europe, The TT was built off the MkIV version of the A (Golf) platform, hence "A4 platform". Audi A4s, to add confusion, were were built off VAG's "B" platform, as was the previous Passat (hence B5 or B5.5). I think the Phaeton is D-platform, and so on. I think the E8 has to do with Audi's VIN number sequence, maybe? Not sure...
Anyway, many enthusiasts and some in the motoring press have been calling the new VW Golf-Jetta/ Audi A3/ Seat Leon A5-platform cars, but this isn't really accurate.
With the newest generation Golf and Jetta, VAG changed its approach, sharing "component sets" rather than entire platforms, which often had rigidly-controlled dimensions and other requirements. PQ35 refers to a new group of shared component sets: engines, gearboxes, suspensions, dashboard internal structures, etc, that will underpin a number of different models. The new approach is supposed to allow more flexibility in making various models by sharing expensive-to-develop components, but still allowing different chassis lengths, widths, and so forth. The new Golf and Jetta, as well as Audi A3 are based on PQ35 architecture. I even think the new-to-Europe Passat is based on PQ35, although with a stretched floorpan (that's why the new Passat will have a Golf-like transverse engine instead of an Audi A4-like north-south arrangement).
Perhaps Mr. 2953 can correct or elaborate?
