2181 code

2181 code
I just had a check engine light come on and checked the code and it said 2181 cooling system performance. what does that mean ? Level is good, temp is within range, ??? anyone have any ideas, It came on after I did a short 95 MPH burst down the interstate then let it coast up the off ramp.

Your TT should warm up so the gauge is at 12 o'clock within about 5 minutes or so. The gauge should not move around once it gets there regardless of how fast you went.
Sluggish thermostat, bad CTS or plastic water pump impeller.

Water pump was replaced with the timing belt change and it was a metal impeller. so I guess I'll change out the thermostat. Car seems to heat up ok and heater works fine . I do have a faint smell of antifreeze in the cabin but show no signs of losing fluid anywhere. marked the overflow bottle and level hasnt changed.

Thanks Mick, I replaced the CTS this morning , which had quit last week about the same time as this light came on. could that be the reason the light came on ? I will replace the thermostat and housing as well as the coolant flange in the spring when I change out the timing belt and associated parts. How do I clear the Check engine light now that the gauge is working (if this was the cause) ?
