How long do the stock Bridgestone Potenza RE040 225/45ZR-17 tires last (mileage) and what is the treadwear rating?
I blew a front tire the other day while driving through a pothole in NYC. The sidewall was completely ruptured.
I'm wondering whether to buy 1 new tire to replace the blown one at $229 or buy a set of 4 Michelin Pilots at $229/each. The Pilots have a treadwear rating of 220 (much higher than Bridgestone's, I think) and are considered the highest performance tires right now. Also, I have almost 20k miles on the current tires.

Treadwear rating is only meaningful when comparing tires made by same manufacturer...
not so meaningful when comparing between two different brands. There is no set standard of measure between manufacturers. Each manufacturer set its own standard for internal comparison.

Check out "Consumers Reports" comparisons
At least once a year (it might even be their annual "auto" issue in April??) they do a good comparison between different tires, including tests of their tire wear. They also provide a good "primer" on selecting tires, what all the numbers and letter codes mean, etc. While they might not cover the exact tires you're considering, they may very well compare other tires from both manufacturers, and you can judge accordingly.
