Default Audi TT 1.8T Overheating

Hey guys I have a 2001 Audi TT 1.8t roadster here. I just had a leaky water pump replaced with a kit I purchased from ECS tuning along with the belts and seals. He said the old pump was a replacement as well. He put coolant from the dealer in. My mechanic who is a friend that works at the stealership replaced everything except the thermostat. Temp sensor was replaced at about 110k. Well, that fixed the leaking issue, but when at idle I notice the temp gauge creeping up to the next notch (sometimes). The high fan kicks on and temp goes back to normal.

When I have the AC or heat on in the car both fans are always kicking Ashe so I don’t experience that issue. So I am curious if this is an issue I should be worried about at all.

My thoughts are radiator or head gasket?? Any insight would be appreciated!

I have the 2001 1.8t roadster. Both fans kick on whenever the climate control is on regardless of whether you want heat or A/C and regardless of the engine coolant temperature.

Without the climate control on my radiator/condenser cooling fans come on when the engine coolant temp hits 92 or 93C according to my cheap OBD-II reader.

Your new temperature sensor has a slightly different calibration than the old one, the wiring connections are older and corroded so changing the sensor is likely to change the temp display on the dash slightly. If your fan is coming on when the engine gets warm and the temperature then comes down it sounds like it is all working as expected.

I would definitely change that thermostat next time the cooling system is drained. It is cheap to replace and my thermostat just failed at about 120k miles.

That is pretty normal.Monitor actual temps in the HVAC screen block 49. You’ll find that the temp gauge moves up one mark at 101C. The second fan comes on then too and temps drop enough to bring the gauge back to center. If driving, airflow keeps temps below this. Typically @ 93C depending on thermostat. As you know, AC on keeps fans running and this temp rise never happens.

I have seen this video before and it doesn't work on my '01 TT roadster, when I hold down the recirc and up arrow button nothing happens. No amount of holding these buttons down gets me to the diagnostic screen that says "1 C". Was this feature added after '01?

It works on both of my 2001 cars. Build date on the coupe is 9 of 2000. Engine must be running. HVAC must be on.
One further note, in order to turn the AC compressor off so that the cooling fans cycle on temperature rather than running constantly, press the Econ button.

Thanks much! I got it to work. Previously I had tried with the ignition on but the engine off. Also I was holding down both buttons simultaneously for anywhere from 1 to 10 seconds and getting no joy. The way I got into diagnostic mode this time was hold down the recirc button for 1 or 2 seconds and then a quick press and release on the up arrow. I was not watching the finger movement in the video carefully. Thanks again.
