Default Audi TT AC Issues

I bought a 2002 Audi TT and simply Love it...
But my ac is now blowing warm air...

I went to 2 places:
1) At Carmax they say i need to replace the ac compressor clutch and plates but not the compressor for 1400$

2) At my local garage they say they will replace the compressor which comes with clutch and plates for 800$

What should I do? Does the compressor comes with the clutch and plates? Who's right?

Thanks a lot in advance for your help!

Default Might not even be a compressor...>

are you sure about that? Many different things will cause that problem.

Default you check your fuses on top of the battery???>>>

some have had those fuses corrode and it leads to lots of problems....compressors are pretty reliable in the TT....worth a check IMO

Default compressor and clutch price here--------->

A bit of advice. Bad compressors are noisy or lock up. Always. Bad compressor clutch can be noisy if clutch plates wear out. (fairly rare) Can be silent and nothing happens if electro-magnet is bad (also fairly rare) There can be no power sent to the clutch if-- low pressure switch is not satisfied due to insufficent or no refrigerant. (fairly common) or a bad fuse or connection (also fairly common). You need someone with a volt meter and some refrigeration pressure guages (and a bit of experience) to diagnose. The carmax guys, or more likely your local garage guys, could be right but I would ask them the details.
Good luck. This may cost you a few bucks but AC work is fairly simple and anything thats wrong can be made good as new. They are great little cars. Default Re: Audi TT AC Issues

I had same problem with my 2003 TT.

I took her to an AC shop where they first checked the system for gas leaks.

To do so they put a special gas, having the feature of getting coloured when in contact with air, in the empty system.

they actually found two leaks; the minor one in the compressor and the major in a valve (I guess was called isoentalpic); the latter was the one making the system not to work.

So they replaced the valve, fully serviced the compressor and checked all the seals.

I spent 400€+VAT (I'm Italian, by the way) that's to say around 280/300USD. The AC has been working great since then.

Ciao
Alessandro

Default Good advice.

At least about the AC. Alessandro I have a bunch of Italian equipment in my dry cleaning stores. I think I've seen that term isoenthalpic or something like that on it but that term won't be known by any US air conditioning shop. I think thats what we call an expansion valve.

You might want to check that Euro--Dollar exchange rate however. When we visited Rome a couple of years ago it was $ 1.35 per Euro. Now I believe it is more like $1.45 per Euro. But! If you ever wish to visit the Southern US I'd be happy to exchange you some dollars for Euros at your rate! :-)

Hope you don't mind my humor.
Y'all have a Great Day.

Default That would be my first guess. See if your radiator fans come on when you have the AC on.

If they don't, then one of the fuses on top of the battery is blown or the contact has corroded. This happened to me and it was a $1.00 fix with a new fuse.

If the fans DO come on, then this fuse is OK and the issue is something else.
