It's a Canon digital rebel xt with the packaged lens . . .
. . . and I think it's smarter than me.(!) I'm slowly trying to learn the digital way, realizing that once you take the photo the work isn't over, there is so much tweaking you can do in Photoshop . . . anyway, I have been taking a bunch of photos and experimenting.

All four shots are over-exposed-Here's why....
Your camera's light meter is calibrated to calculate exposure on 18% gray, but you have pure black right in the middle of the meter. Since your camera is trying to make your black 18% gray, it is overexposing.
Additionally, shiny surfaces give your light meter fits, especially in bright sunlight.
Get a good book like, " Understanding Exposure," by Bryan Peterson, spend a little time with it, and you will get better photos and you will not even need PhotoShop.
