cd overheating problem?

cd overheating problem?
on a long drive (4hrs+) back to new york from washington the weekend before last i noticed that the display on my head unit was flashing. i attributed this to some sort of overheating because when i drove it last week there was no sign - that was just short trips in the city.
this weekend i went up to martha's vineyard (about 4hrs - no real speeding - ma cops apparantly want $10 per mile over...) and didn't get the problem. two things: 1. it wasn't quite as warm and i flipped the cd caddy lid for part of the drive. no sign of the flashing display.
my question is (yes, there is a point to all this) - has anybody else experienced this and is it a overheating problem or something else?
i'm sure larrytt wouldn't get this with his 'non-bose' setup... ;-)
