Default Clutch / Break Light Switch Help

For some time now my 01 has had the traction control light on. In reading about that one of the possible causes I believe is a faulty break light switch. Since I live in a dry place I haven't worried to much about it.

Last night on my way home I discovered that my cruise control has stopped working. Push the button, nothing happens.

The TT is a 6sp manual quattro. From what I can find in posts, this is usually due to the clutch or break light switch going bad.

Since I have the traction control light on, I'm inclined to suspect the break light switch could be the problem. Is there a way to test these switches? From what I can tell my lights work fine.

Given that i have read the break light switch is easily broken and the dealer wants $60 for the break light switch, I don't want to just buy one and risk it.

Do you think I am looking to the right part or could it just be a coincidence. I do have the RossTech software and scanner if I need to use it to do diagnostics. Unfortunately I wouldn't know how to do the test. So if that's needed any help in how to use the software for this would be greatly appreciated.

On another note, looking at a guide on VWVortex they mention an A-D switch. If the car has say a "D" model switch, can I just buy an "A" switch and install it?

Default When my brake switch failed, the brake lights were on

Don't know if this is always the case but 99% certain you have a brake switch problem if the cruise does not work. Switch cost sounds very high. Did you check a parts store or VW dealer?

The A switch is not self adjusting but is more reliable, the D model has a ratcheting length rod that is kind of a PITA to set up however it fits all models. If you get the length too long it can get jammed in there.

I used an A instead of a D in my 2001 with no problems. FYI there is a similar switch on the clutch that can cause cruise problems.

So now I am thinking that it could be the clutch switch. Basic break checks show that all might lights work. Then magically last night the cruise started to work again while going down the freeway... I have to wonder if the clutch switch is sticking..

Put the codes out first. If the brake light swith is faulty, it generally would not have brake lights. Traction control is controled by ur abs module and traction ctrl module and they rely on ur sensors like ur wheel speed sensors, yaw sensors and lat sensors. I had the same problem and changing the front two speed sensors solved the problem. I would recommend to read or just post your codes here first, then delete the code and wait for the code to reappear to confirm! Btw if u do decide to swap the sensors u need to recalibrate the sensors on a flat level surface or do the parking lot turn in circles calibration

Perhaps im not using it right, but I am not showing any codes when I run mode 3 current DTC's i get no codes. My traction control issue is probably the wheel sensors then, as it seems to be the most common issue. Now I just have to find them.

The problem with the codes is, it is that it resets and will b there if you dont turn ur car off. So keep ur car on to scan for the code when it lights up i had to force my codes to show to see whats wrong i ended getting brake pressure as the code .. Which wasnt the case. I ended up testing the front speed sensor with a lapscope and found glitches. And if u have done an alignment, u need to reset the sensors as well
