So I am driving home and the low fuel warning comes on. By the time I have climbed the major hill and the way home and started down the other side, the icon was gone. Has anyone gotten the low fuel warning and then had it go away before filling up.
I ended up putting 13.9 gallons in it.

The fuel level meter is simply a ballast that floats on top of the gas.
It's at a fixed location. If it's in the front of the gas tank (as in the TT), the gas level will appear to decrease as you go up a steep hill (although the gas is just temporarily shifting to the rear of the gas tank). As you went down the hill it returned to it's correct level.

I find that if I pay attention to the low fuel light I'll fill up around 13.5-14 gallons. If...
If I wait until I get to around 25 miles left (according to the tank). I fill up with 15+ gallons. I've never seen much more that 15 gallons though.

I don't have the trip computer ...
But I know that when the Fuel light comes on I have between 40 and 50 miles to go before I am empty.
The most I have filled the car with other than when I ran out of gas twice. Once on purpose and once because I was too far from a gas station
I have been able to put in 15.912 and 15.8 gallons before.
Usually I am putting in 14.5-15.0 gallons. I have also done over 400 miles on one tank of gas. Usually I am in the 350 range.

Not exactly . . .
For the 2000 TT's it was part of the "convenience" package, which also included the heated seats and radio display in the dash. My car did not have this.
For the 2001 model year the computer was made standard.
