Default Difference in tread depth between front and rear.

What is the maximum difference that is "allowable" between the front and rear tires?

After a track weekend a few weeks ago I was left with 2/32 on the front and 4/32 on the rear. The RT-615's have 8/32 new. I swapped them to have the 4/32 on the front and the 2/32 on the rear. Enough for one more track day and I have a track day coming up in two weeks and was hoping to use the rest of these tires up then buy a fresh set.

The question! Last night I took a turn too tight and slightly damaged one of my rear (2/32) tires on the lip of the sidewall against a sharp curb. It looks more cosmetic than structural, but I don't want to risk it on the track. Should I buy two new 8/32 tires and put them on the front of the car just before the track day and wear them down to be closer to the 4/32 tires on the track? I want to buy my tires from Vulcan Tire or Discount Tires Direct, neither of which have tire shaving but are the best prices on the net.

Thoughts?

Change two tires at a time... front to rear it can handle about a 5% diff in circumference.

Definately changing two at a time. Is a 4/32" difference less than 5%?

5% is a lot. It's probably close to an inch if you do the math.

right. circumference is directly proportional to diameter. 5% of 20" for example would be 1"

Default And since our tires are 23"+ in diameter, no amount of tread loss will likely take you >5%

even if you used different brands and tread patterns...

Default Thanks guys, I just ordered the last two 225/45/17 615's from Vulcan Tire

Should be fun at the California Speedway in a week and a half. I should have Defcon 2's and better brakes installed by then as well!
