Default driver's side window switch problem finally solved

... and it turns out that for once, it wasn't my fault. specifically, ever since i replaced my driver's door panel and associated trim, my window switches would not work properly due to interference from the aluminum switch housing. i was convinced this must be an installation error, and tore the door apart several times trying to figure out what i'd botched.

finally, i convinced myself that no matter how massaged (or manhandled, if you prefer) the housing position, it would interfere with one of the switches -- and that my issues must be a manufacturing defect in the part. so i ordered a new one.

well, the new part arrived, and lo and behold, it is indeed different (see photo). the curvature of the piece may screw with the eye, but it cannot fool a ruler, which confirmed the new one was 1/16" wider front-to-back. anyway, i snapped the new one in and both switches work flawlessly now.

grrrrr!

Default hmmm...now when would they have changed that part to be different?

seems odd that they would make it a different size.

Default i don't think it was an intentional change, just a manufacturing defect.

same part number on both parts.

Default i have the same issue with the front license plate insert...all part numbers are identical,

but only my original fits the 3.2 bumper...all others (4 were ordered at different times and different dealers) were all off by almost a quarter of an inch. makes the insert buckle when trying to press fit it...and the surface of the insert looks like its forced in there. i measured all of them weird...not sure if it shrinks over time, but it really did not look good. haven't resolved it yet...i'm thinking about patching the holes in mine and repainting since it fits.

Default Identical part number /= Identical part... MK2 Control arms are the same number, but the '01

version is different from '02 and later. Clearly dimensional/design differences, but not revision number difference with the same part number...

Default they often don't stamp the trailing letter on the part itself ...

but in those cases i've always seen the trailing letter show up in etka.

the only exception to this rule that i know of is for quattro gmbh parts -- such as the piano black tt quattro sport grilles.
