DV question .....again
Is DV failure a known problem for the 2002's? Just got a 2002 225ttc; don't think I have a problem. And, can someone refresh my memory and describe in more detail what honking/whistling noises occur. On acceleration? On deceleration? What's the best way to feel the flat spot in acceleration @ 2800-3500? With hard acceleration? There's just too many posts on this topic to weed through.
Looking for that comprehensive, exhaustive, definitive post,
FamilyCar
latest part# I am aware of ends with "N", dunno what rev is shipping on the 02s.
(you can read the part # without removing parts, but the number is stamped on the back of the valve (facing the firewall) so on mine I had to read it with a mirror inserted into the engine bay)
we've certainly had failures reported with "N", so unless they're up to "O", or "P", or (?), it's probably a candidate for failure someday (at least if you have a 225). then too, even if they've got a new rev, why should we expect it to be any better? there's a reason the current part is at rev "N". first rev was "A". do the math...
typical failure includes noise (whoosh/whistle/honk/etc.) on lifting off the throttle when shifting, most noticeable under hard accelleration, usually around the 3000-3500 rpm range. sometimes the noise is fairly obvious, other times not. some people also get an engine check light (I did), but that hasn't happened with everyone. also you can get some surging between shifts, when the valve is *supposed* to be "diverting" pressure but in fact it is still giving it to the turbo (thus helping the engine produce power when you'd like it to be easing off a bit during the shift). after the yreplaced my bad valve, I noticed accelleration was much smoother again.
disclaimer: I would say that, based on its history, the DV is something to watch for. but I wouldn't panic either. the initial failure is not catastrophic; the problem should be fixed sooner than later, but it's not dangerous and you can still drive the car for a while. if you have a new car, don't worry, just drive. just keep "DV" in the back of your mind, just in case...
I think there have a been more than a few definitive posts (I like to think one of mine might be one? :-) but too lazy to search for it right now. but this should do for now :-)
meanwhile, enjoy your new car!
Especially notice it in 1st gear. Before the change, the car would kind of hesitate until 3-3.5K rpm until all hell breaks loose and the car redlines in about a sec.
Now power delivery is one smooth woosh with much better throttle response.
I didn't expect such a dramatic improvement, but it seemed everyone on this messageboard has replaced it, now I know why.
Nothing was improved for 2002.
Looks like it has the same cheepo plastic Bosch unit all the rest had.
