Default Engine Repairs

It seems my 2000 TT 1.8L FWD with 80k is in need of some repairs. I've noticed a slight leak and the dealer says its my valve cover gasket and cam adjuster seals. Quote: $450 parts and labor. While they were changing my oil they noticed my dip stick holder was broken (more like they broke it because it was fine the other day) and could fix for $30. Prices seem fair?

Has anyone else needed to fix an oil leak like this? I looked through my Bentley real quick and didn't see a section on cam adjuster seals so I'm not sure how much work there is to replace. Since the parts aren't expensive I'm considering doing the work myself and throwing in an ECS lightweight pulley while the hood is up.

If anyone knows what's involved in the work (other than the obvious valve cover removal) please let me know.

Thanks!

Default Dealer replaced my drain pan due to a leak.

And I'd do some research before putting a lightweight pulley in there. Just so you know what you're getting into.

Dip stick tubes are 7 bucks at a VW dealer.

Default Currently running ECS underdrive but unhappy with it.

Two months after the install my battery kicked. This was the second battery my car has gone through in the last five years. I'm thinking the alternator was partially bad to begin with so reducing the speed didn't help.

Interesting. Glad you know the risks. Let us know what happens with the crank pulley.

Dealer replaced valve cover gasket due to a leak about a month ago. I don't think its uncommon.

If you don't mind me asking, how much did it run you?

Default sounds about right-- cam adj seal is a pretty involved repair -- at least 1 camshaft has to come out

that said, it would be 1/2 - 2/3 that price at a good independent shop

Default you >

realize there's a difference between an "underdrive pulley" and a "lightweight crank pulley".

It was done on my last service prior to my CPO expiring so it was free. :-)
