Default ESP Boost Problem

Hey guys I tried to search for this problem but could not find it. My 01 quattro roadster is doing something weird. When I accelerate hard in 3rd gear the engine makes lots of power until I hit 3500rpm then it sounds like the dump valve opens up and I loose all my boost. When I shut off the ESP this does not happen. Is this just my esp kicking in at a weird time? Any Ideas?

There is no dump valve in a 1.8t...there is a Divertor valve however and the OEM ones are prone to failure in higher boost situations.

I would remove the DV and check for a tear in the diaphragm....

Why that happens when you shut off ESP, no clue at the moment.

when you experience the issue, does the ESP light in the gauge cluster turn on? that would indicate that the ESP is engaging. if it is engaging when it's not supposed to, then it could indicate a faulty pitch/yaw sensor or something.

The diverter valve is mechanical and are prone to failure but is not in any way linked to the ESP?
The diverter valve is just a dump valve but instead of dumping the pressure to atmosphere, the diverter valve dumps the pressure back in the intake which aids in reducing Turbo lag by helping the turbo to spin faster and reducing the turbo from stalling or vacuum on the compressor side.
Do you have Vagcom? Vagcom is a life saver but it doesn't catch everything. My N75 valve had mostly failed and it didn't show up on Vagcom under a fault but it showed under a data logging feature. The diverter valve is cheap so I would try it one way or another but the ESP part has me puzzled? How many accelerations have you tried and had the results repeated every time? ESP light on the dash flashing? Good luck and post any results or finds and we'll keep thinking about it.

Default boost

Well I have no vag com yet but I plan on getting one. I have probably had the boost kick out 25 times in third gear when accelerating hard I have not looked to see if the ESP light comes on but I'll check at lunch. The car goes like hell with the ESP bypassed thats why I don't think its the turbo it must be something to do with the traction controll.

When you say boost kick out...you mentioned earlier you heard it...is that not the case? When it kicks out, do you have a boost gauge that confirms you are losing boost or are you just saying that it is lost boost...
I ask, as there are several electrical things that could be causing your issue as well...MAF is one of them. Is what you described a stumble? or a misfire?

Without specific errors from VAG-COM or better descriptions, it will be a guess at best as to what the problem is.

If you get a hold of VAG, you need to check blocks 032, 002, 112 as a start.....

well I can hear the turbo really starting to Whoosh loud and I can feel her putting alot of torque to the ground then right about 3500 the whoosh stops and all the power seems to be gone she still accelerates but not nearly as fast.

Well, based on that description, i would say it is a failing MAF...but that is my best guess based on your description...

You need to get a hold of VAG-COM to do some runs so it can be narrowed down.

Wow! Traffic in the forum...

Clues for me are that with ESP turned off, no problem, ESP on.. "loss of boost" which I think in this case is simply loss of power.

Forget DV valve. You have an issue with the ESP system. VAG-COM (or VCDS as it's known now) is good but you'll likely see no codes and you'll need a co-pilot to run the data collection for the ESP system when the problem occurs.

This is likely as someone suggested a sensor issue. Seems a lot of yaw sensors fail and the car likely thinks it is spinning so it cuts engine power.

This could all also be the result of left foot brake pedal use too. Do you float your left foot above the brake pedal? The car *will* cut power if you have your foot on the brake.

While it is possible, in almost all cases the ESP light and or the ABS light will come on if those yaw sensors fail.....He needs to VAG it to determine the error, but the MAF is still on the table IMO.
