Exploded Battery.
Of course, this has to happen at the worst time. Wife and daughter in the car, it's raining a monsoon, 8PM.
Wife pulled into a service station, and after filling the tank, tried to start the car, ka-blooey!
I get the frantic cell-phone call, I grab some tools, a flashlight, my rain-coat and a box of baking soda.
Of course, the auto parts store across the street doesn't have a replacement. "Well, we show one here on the computer, but we can't find it". Great. 45 min. later, I'm a hero for fixing the car.
I had lots of "helpers" at the station.
One guy said, "Well, why don't you just try to start it anyway?"
I have never seen this happen in a car before.
I've heard of this happening when the cables are reveresed when trying to jump-start, but not when you turn the car on.
The only thing I can figure out is, when I removed the broken battery, I saw that the vent tube was clogged. The battery was 4 years old. I expect it was low on water, and it had been producing hydrogen gas.
The vent line was clogged, so the gas built up in the empty spaces inside the battery.
I dumped almost the whole box of baking soda in the battery compartment, and doused it with a lot of water.
Anybody ever see anything similar to this??

The '95 A6 battery is under the back seat. That exploded on night after dinner in the restaurant parking lot upon cranking. Similar, rain, etc. Had to leave the car there overnight and return to it early in the morning after finding replacement at Sears a few blocks away from where it stranded me. Car smelled acid for months.
