Default ExTTreme: Is the engine for the 180 and the 225 the same engine?

This came up in the chat last night and someone mention that the two engine are exactly the same, except the K04, 2nd intecooler, etc. Can you clear this up, since your name was mention in the conversation. thanks!

Default Yes and no. For all intents and purposes I believe this to be true...

Tho there are subtle and primarily ancillary-related differences. I hold the basic block, crank and connecting rods to be identical, with pistons being a lower compression design in the 225. Cylinder head for the 225 has a correspondingly deeper combustion chamber to augment lower compression. All block-mounted components appear to be interchangeable between the two engines tho some would require routing changes, ie intake/IC lines, etc.

I believe the 225 engine to be a basically 180 engine with a few things done to facilitate higher boost/more horsepower from a lower compression engine and no more. I could be wrong, but until empirical evidence rolls down the pike thats my belief.

Default Wasn't it you...

that found the 225 intake and exhaust manifolds to be huge on the 225 compared to the 180. especially the intake?

Default I dont think I "discovered" that as its clearly visible to the naked eye in any...

225 under-hood engine shot. But yes I have one of each and they are absolutely bigger than the 180. But those are "bolt-on" or "ancillary" pieces and a tit for tat swap item from a 225 to a 180 (tho intake plenum requires some re-routing of vacuum hoses and throttle body wiring/IC duct), but not really considered internal engine components.

Default I asked because...

someone did a very exhaustive (pun unintended) comparison for the forum members some time ago, a person that had ordered the 225 intake and exhaust parts to have them honed and ported. I thought that it was you, but was unsure.

Anyhow, whoever did the comparison seemed very surprised at the difference in the internal cross-sections between the parts... to the point where it seemed wholly unexpected...

Since we're on the subject of "internal" parts, though, what's up with the oil jets that supposedly cool the pistons? Do they exist or is that more "let's make the 225 sound like hot sh*t" verbiage?

Default That was me. If memory serves I was most amzazed at intake runner...

sizes compared to 180 as its almost 50% larger for each port and 200%+ in the intake plenum. Another thing that jumped out at me then was how closely "gasket-matched" Audi manifolds are to their respective head ports and gaskets.

All induction/exhaust flows are certainly enhanced and less restrictive on the 225 than the 180 and I think there's some pretty serious ponies in those two items. Maybe as much as half of the overall 225's power over the 180.
