Headlight Issue
I just got some xenon headlamps for my rebuild project, used. The problem is, the xenon ballasts are located differently on the new lights than on the car I was rebuilding (they must have moved the ballasts sometime during the 2001 M.Y. as my other 2001 TT has the ballasts in the same place as the new lights.) anyway- here is the issue.
first- a picture of the new lights(ballasts located on the headlight itself):

now, here is a pic of the front end of my rebuild project:

if you look closely you can see the ballasts mounted horizontally behind the bumper frame (on the right you can see the yellow xenon warning sticker)
my question is- has anyone put the one sort of lights in a car that has the other lights? (I am not sure which placement is "newer")
any suggestions? I'm not quite sure what to do whith the wiring yet.. may just have to fab some connectors...

Audi makes 4 slightly different headlights for the TT
I found this out when I had my front end fixed. I have a 2000 TT Quattro Coupe with Xenons. They replaced one of the lights, but everytime they would order one from audi parts, it was the wrong one. After three tries, they actually got the right one to FIT and work properly. Each light was just a little different from the other. And that was within the same model year.
Bottom line, you may have the wrong lights for your particular car! Woops!

They did make that change from MY 2000 > 2001
I initially tried to install 2000 Euro-Spec Headlights in my TT, but found that the harness was completely different. You're lucky though since you're installing the 2001 lights. Just remove the old ballasts from your car and make a harness (or purchase from Audi) to wire before the "old" ballast to the new headlights.
