Default Help.. is this safe???

Hey guys
I'll spare you the details.... short story, we had to replace the K03 turbo in our Audi A3 1.8T and the heat shield hasnt arrived for 7 weeks.......

But we need the car for transport badly so our mechanic (not Audi) said we could drive it without the heat shield as long as we didnt thrash the engine.

Is this true??? because i dont want to have cooked oil lines and another blown turbo....

any help would be appreciated.

btw, the car is completely stock

Default Which heat shield? And why did it need to be replaced?

Clarification: I understand why a turbo needs to be changed, but why the shield? Was it damaged upon removal?

Default Which heat shield?

I don't know how your mechanic could tell you that it would be perfectly all right to drive a car with a turbo that glows bright orange even after driving slowly for a short period of time!

I would wait for the heat shield. There is a reason for it, not the least of which is literally torching the car!

Default Re: Which heat shield? And why did it need to be replaced?

We bought the A3T second hand with 57000kms.... and after 3 weeks the turbo blew up....... we had to battle with the dealer to get him to replace the turbo.... after he actually replaced the turbo we brought it back to our local mechanic to have it inspected. Our mechanic found out that the heat shield was missing along with a few clamps.

He also told us it wouldnt be worth fighting with the dealer again for the heat shield because there was no proof we bought it with a heat shield. So basically he said he would order and install it for us. Its been 7 weeks and apparently Audi Australia sent out mechanic the wrong heat shield (a triangular one not the normal rectangular one apparently).

So its been 7 weeks and we desperately need the car for transport so last week our mechanic told us it was safe to drive in the meantime....... But i seriously dont want another blown turbo....
