Idling problem

Default Idling problem

I have a 2001 TT225. It has a slow drain on the battery which will kill it if I let it sit for two or so weeks(don't drive the car much recently). Anyways, after i jump start it, it will idle fine for about two minutes. All at once the rpms drop, the tach bottoms out, battery light flickers, then it picks up and is on its way. It does it fairly consistently for about ten minutes. Also whenever it does this, i can hear a whirring noise coming from the alternator. Does anyone have any ideas, or had this happen to you?

Wild Assed Guess. Never heard of this problem before but my guess is that you have a battery short. The dropping RPM and alternator noise are due to a very heavy alternator load, like a serious short. My guess is that shorts in the battery are being burned away when you start the car after a long period of non-use.

Default Check battery voltage first

If there are significant battery shorts, your car should crank slower than normal after not being used for a day or so and the battery voltage before starting will be under 12.6V. It would also be useful to check the voltage after starting and during the rpm changes to see what the alternator is doing.
