Lap Timer Systems
Anyone know about these things?
I saw some at the track today and am interested in something like that. The ones I saw had a beacon on the car and then I guess they setup a tranmitter at the start/finish line. Then the beacon records the lap times and is downloaded later to a computer.
I guess that is really the only way to do it. I don't want to spend a ton of money but I'd like to have some sort of system like that.
Any info?

They run about $300-1,000 depending on the system you get.
They work as you described. Many tracks actually will rent you the transponder for your car since they have the track side part embedded at the start finish line, or 20-50 feet away from the track. Some tracks won't allow you to use a transponder and some organizations also won't allow it since it goes against the "drivers School" aspect of many track days.
Check Racerwholesale.com, I believe they sell these. Many racing organizations also sell them so they can keep track of who has what. They also work group discounts at the beginning of the racing season.
I had one a long time ago, works great and i very accurate. Much better than a stop watch ever could hope to be.
Just be careful when you hide the part along the track. You might need to hide it so someone does not steal it and also where the track is willing to allow you to keep it.

I've seen laser systems in cars that I have been in
they place a mirror or something similar at a point on the track, and have a laser device in the car. As it passes the mirror, it shows the lap time. Pretty slick.
