Default motion sensor question

I think that my motion sensors are not working properly, but I am not sure. I was told by my dealer that air motion in the car sets off the alarm. However, when I leave my windows down and set the alarm, nothing happens. If I sit in my car and set the alarm nothing happens either. Am I missing the obvious or is something wrong?

Default when I set the alarm with my windows down and then reach into the car...

the alarm goes off.
Inside the center console there is a button to turn off the motion sensor (next to the gas and trunk buttons). Check to see if yours is on or off.
GrishFish

Default Something might be wrong -- but I'm not sure that "air" can set off the motion detectors.

In my experience, locking myself in the car and then moving around somewhat sets off the alarm (of course I tried it!) The sensors seem to be located in the small grill at the very top of the instrument cluster, and the other grill near the dome light. At first I didn't think the instrument cluster grill did anything, but I tried locking myself in the car and then moving just my hand right in front of it -- sure enough, the alarm goes off.

Last weekend I had the TT on a ferry between Bainbridge Island and Seattle, and locking the car on the vibrating ferry deck set off the alarm after about 20 seconds (just before I was out of earshot in my quest for hot chocolate). Pushing the motion-sensor disable button in the center console allowed me to lock the car without this behavior.

Based on this, there are probably both motion-seeing (the hand in front of the istrument cluster) and motion-sensing (the ferry) components.

Try locking yourself in the car and moving your hands in front of those two areas. Or take a ferry ride

Default motion sensor are really set of by wind

I really don't believe that this statement is that true. The dealer might not have know what he was talking about. Because I have the roadster and when I leave the top down there is obviously there are breezes and the only time the alarm goes off is when I stick my hands in to get something.

Default Sounds like yours is not working properly - on my roadster,

if I have the top down and the alarm set, waving my arm inside the car sets off the alarm.

Default Motion Sensors...how they work.

They flood the nearby region with some type of signal, sonic, thermal, whatever, and look for reflections back.

Wind doesn't set off a motion sensor in itself, however should the wind blow something in the car, it should..
Tom Boucher

Default Alright, here is how it works...

First, the motion sensor is not armed until the lights on your doors change from a fast blink to a slow blink. I have timed this as 30ish seconds after arming on my 2000 Coupe.

I thought mine was broken at first, too. The sensors are infrared or RF, not sure which. In a coupe, once they are activated (fast blink) I can walk past the driver's door (windows down) and set it off. I was within 6 inches away from the window opening. The alarm went off.

Using the switch to turn off the motion sensor is another process in itself. I do not remember it exactly. I remember something about having the door open for the switch to work. Perhaps someone else can elaborate on that process. It is in the archives of the forum.

Your dealer needs a beating. Most do every once in a while. AT LEAST KNOW THE CAR, RIGHT CLIFF?
Ivan

Default further info

I sat in my car for about a minute, running my hand infront of both grills (in dash and by dome light) and nothing happened. Also, I reached in my car (window down, alarm set) and opened the door from the inside and nothing happened. The only way I can set if off is if I stick the key in the ignition . . . .doesn't seem right. I'll guess I will have to take it in.

Default Right, Ivan--but I don't think we should tell AoA that--they seem to be kinda sensitive...

and I am certainly not one to bruise anyone's ego. I'm just a very laid back, relaxed sorta guy. You might even mistake me for comatose. Why I hardly even open my mouth--hardly. But you know that.
