Default Newbie. Which model?

So, my wife and I have both fallen in love with the TT recently when I missed
a deal on one. Haven't even driven one yet, but I think I want the 1.8 turbo 225 hp Quattro convertible. Any thoughts? Is the hard top a better idea? I live in northern Ontario so there might be some cool weather driving. Should I look for the 3.2 instead? Help!!!

I assume you want an older Mk 1 since you posted on this board. IMO, the 2002+ cars are more reliable than the 00 and 01 which had several new design issues and recalls. The V6 is a sweet engine. The 1.8 needs a new timing belt every 5 years or 60 K miles, do it unless you get documentation that it has been done recently. Read this FAQ Fourtitude.com - Audi TT FAQ

Make sure the glove box latch works perfectly, particularly in the early models. It is $1K to replace. Make sure all the dash display pixels work, the temperature gage reads straight center when warm, and the fuel gage works. Otherwise you will have to rebuild the dash cluster.

Coupes vs roadsters are a personal preference. Be careful if the roadster is your only car. Many people buy one only to sell it soon because it only holds 2 people which cramps some folks social scene, even though the coupe rear seats are only good for kids or midgets. I've owned 2 180 HP roadsters and loved them. The 180 roadsters have a much larger trunk than the 225 roadsters because they are all FWD.

In 2002 i bought a brand new 225 Coupe.Owned it for 4 years, loved that car. Many Audis later, including a MK2 TT roadster, my current daily driver is BMW i3 Rex.
I missed the weekend top down driving and manual transmission so just purchased a 2002 225 Roadster with 65k.It's a lot of fun and still gets compliments as much as my Coupe did 15 years ago.
Not planning to put many miles on it.
If it's going to be your daily driver in Ontario i would probably go with a 225 Coupe.

My main advice is to buy one with good maintenance records and pass any that doesn't have them.

Default You did not read the FAQ I recommended or you would know the answer

If you want to be fully informed about your purchase, read the FAQ. The 1.8L engine was offered in the US as a 180 HP version and a 225 HP version. Unless the car has been moded, A TT with the 1.8L 225 HP engine will have a 6 speed manual tranny and dual exhausts.

Also, for the ultimate WOW factor, get a roadster with the rare baseball seats. Both my Mk 1s had them and they are incredible to look at but only about 10% of roadsters were sold with them.

My suggestion is to do lots of reading here and other forums. QuattroWorld TT Mk1 and TT owners UK to name a couple. Then find the best one you can find. I prefer the 225 6 speed. The 3.2s are nice but far less plentiful and a DSG transmission failure is a scary thought. Rare but very expensive. I have a coupe that I bought 14 years ago and a roadster that I bought last Feb. Both are 2001s. The roadster is nice on a pretty day but space is very limited compared to the coupe. I agree with Vegas that a roadster with baseball seats is very desirable. So is a 2002 ALMS coupe though. Still low mileage and good care are the most important characteristics. My roadster was a 52000 mile garage queen. It looks 3 years old rather than 17. I was lucky to find it. Did a timing belt, water pump, tensioner and serviced all the fluids and it is good to go.
Good luck in YOUR search!

Ok. Did some reading, took one for a ride. It was the 1.8 coupe. Nice ride. But had a clunk one rear wheel- shock? And a grinding when doing a tight turn. Not much headroom. Think I'll look for a convertible 1.8/225 6 speed
