Default Oil Changes

A quick question...I just posted a thread regarding the used TT that I recently purchased. Do most of you do anything special for oil changes? In the past when I owned a Toyota I would just go to any 30 minute oil change shop. Do those of you that have it done go to a specialty shop? I'm not sure it's worth the money, but hey...I'm a new TT owner so I'd like to see what you think. Thanks!

Default I don't think I'd trust mine at a jiffy lube type place...

in between warranty covered changes I do it myself. Mobil 1 5w30 and a new filter every 5k miles

Default If you take your car to monkey lube>>>>

It will take them 30 minutes just to figure out that filter must be inside that funny lookin black thing....and they'll be pissed...at you...by the time they do.

Please, Please ,please do not take your TT to one of those quickylube places.

Pay the dealer, find a genuine german car specialist, or learn to do it yourself.

Default It's a very difficult (relatively) car to change the filter on. More >>>

There are people out there to whom the word "Torx" means nothing...well...they're in trouble if they bought this car used.

Default jiFEEloob will **** up yr car......

do not repeat do not let a franchise joint do yr oil change. I made that mistake [knowing better] last yr., and they jammed the filter so that it was crushed & not fully functional.

Default by all means, listen to all here. go to either the dealer or a respectable >>

mechanic that works on German cars. I take mine to Dealer Alternative in West Orange, NJ...they charge me $23 to change the oil and filter, which I supply them with (Mobil1 0W-40 and OEM filter).

Default The one tool I found that is absolutely required is>>

An end cap oil filter wrench. The filter is very hard to reach, and this tool has worked for me every time. You need to make sure you get the correct size though. There is no tool I know of to help snake the old filter through all the plumbing without sloshing some used oil all over, although I remember someone suggested using a nail or punch to drain the oil out of the old filter before removing. Have a lot of rags handy, and let the car sit over night before reinstalling the underbody air diffuser (or whatever you call that big black plastic cover held on with the torx screws) so any spilled oil drips off first. Good luck!

Default If you've changed oil before you can do it yourself...

Just did mine for the first time last week and the hardest part was getting the filter off (didn't have a filter socket, had the band type) and getting the filter down through all the plumbing and wires without spilling it. I punched a hole in the bottom but only minimal will drain and that was only after cracking the filter loose to vent it. It will make a mess when you snake the filter down and out but just wipe it all up real good. I put the filter back on hand tight(pretty darn tight). I used 5w-30 mobil one-didn't have 5w-40. Manual says this is ok. Reinstall the engine cover with the million torx screws and the 4 plastic twist-plugs on the sides in the wheelhousings. Almost forgot those, they twist about a quarter turn to line up the pin slot and the center can be pryed out and will release the whole clip. I used a quarter to turn em. Wasn't really that bad after doing it and knowing the procedure and that piece of mind!
