Default overheating issues

I just bought a 2000 TT coupe. This is my first TT. Car has 136K miles. Have been experiencing some overheating issues. The indicator needle tends to fluctuate between halfway and three-quarters. a couple of days ago it maxed out and the temp warning came on. I parked it and cranked it the next morning. Temp was fine and never overheated. Since the cooling fans were running, I figured it to be a stuck thermostat. Didn't know about the 49C diagnostic at the time. Changed thermostat and the needle still rides dangerously close to "H", but only intermittently. Tried the 49C and 51C trick. Coolant temp stayed at 90 C and engine temp fluctuated between 106 and 112C depending on traffic stops. is this normal?

First thing to do is check the cluster and coolant temp sensor.

Both the cluster (temp and fuel level mostly) and the coolant temp sensor are high failure items.

You need to buy/ borrow a VAG.com to run the tests on the cluster and compare the gauge to the ECU. Another possibility is you have old style water pump with a plastic impeller in there and it's breaking up.

I'm kind of a newbie. My wife drives a 2010 TDI Diesel A3 and I just bought the TT on a whim. Shoulda checked it out better i guess. Anyway, I have no ide what a VAG.com is. Give me a quick lesson, please. I would really appreciate it! Thanks!

VAG.com is a diagnostic setup that works on VW/ Audi cars.

Visit Ross-tech for more info, an essential part of your toolkit if you want to work on your own car, or if you want an idea of what ails you before taking it to a shop. Will work on both your Audis.

I have had Audis for over 12 years and it has saved me $$$$.
