Default Replace Back Window on Roadster Question

Hi Everyone: Has anyone ever had to replace the back window on 2001 TT Roadster. I just about started crying after realizing I left a 12 pack of cokes in back compartment that shattered the glass.

I'm sure I'll have to replace whole top. Any recommendations? Sounds like a call to insurance company.

Default Been there-done that : If lucky you have a low deductible for glass damage...

Yes you have to replace the whole top- forget dealer as they will most likely sub it out to a upholstery shop. To get a head start call porsche/VW/jaguar dealers and ask who does their tops. You will get a couple of names with some being on everyones list. If I remember correctly the top is about a $1300 item and install should be in neighborhood of $500. If your deductible for comprehensive is low your OK. I have a $1000 ded for collision but $0 for comprehensive. It took me 3 weeks for audi to get a top as they are obviously not stocked by dealers. Hopefully one is in the US or Canada. Mine broke in Oct 01 so hopefullly with more roadsters in country than then a top should be quicker to get. So skip any glass replacement place- Get right with your insurance company-Find out who does replacement tops in your area-As soon as insurance OKs get to the top guy so he can order the top (he gets a discount) and then just hang in there.

Any shop that does porsches should be good as the top is very similar to boxster. My guy said the audi top was nicer than porsche to install- Oh- start sucking the thousands of glass beads out of the rear area.

For speed I copied the above from an old post so the prices have probably increased (what are the chances of that?).

Good Luck, Bob (and forget about the cokes!!)

Default Bierburner had the same thing happen at ACNA Deal's Gap rally last month...

And I'm almost certain that he DID NOT have to have his entire top replaced. His window was actually broken by his video camera. I don't recall him making a post about the incident, but he told me all about it. Try sending him an email for more info. Good luck!

Default I spoke to an AUDI rep at the time who tried to expedite a top...

She said "isn't that the stupidist thing" about the non-replacable back glass. Someone had a EKTA pic of the entire top with the glass/top shown as a single part number. I wasted a lot of calls until I realized that the glass could not be replaced. I'm not saying someone couldn't put something back in there somehow, but it's not meant to be done.

Since my top was perfect except for the glass I thought I'd keep it and maybe sew some vinyl in at a boat canvas shop, maybe with a zipper like in the old days. A usable spare just in case. Then the installers usually cut the top off rendering them trash- so the extra time they would charge me didn't rationalize saving the old top.

Default replacements tops are not that costly...you can get it for about $600

from <A HREF="http://www.robbinsautotopco.com/homepage.html">Robbins Tops</A>

From what I've read they have a pretty solid reputation. I was quoted $380 for installation at a local shop that the dealer uses.
