Default should i get a tt

so i wanted a sports car, but winters here arent fun for sports cars, then i found out that some audi tt's come with awd, my only concern is the parts/labor expenses, ive been reading some peoples experiences with them, some have very good, some have extremely bad, my dad does my typical maintenance, but hes never done them on a foreign vehicles, only american, would he still be able to do these on an audi, are they extremely diff. ive read that some people have paid hundreds of dollars just for oil changes or brake changes, ive been looking at this 2002 tt quattro, 225 i believe, the one with the duel exhaust, its got 80k miles, owner said they replaced the timing belt and water pump, should i be worried, he wants $9000 for it, what kind of parts expenses am i going to be looking at, whats typical of these tt's, and ive read that the newer ones have fewer problems, but i cant afford a newer one so thats not an option, unless i run across a killer deal for one

TT isnt much of a sports car, but suspension and few engine mods certain will make it one. time belt and water belt are essential. but be prepared for little things. knock sensor - $60 Coil pack recall - $150 unless you can lemon it threw the stealer(audi dealer) for free. but over all you will have a quick and very beautiful car with good mpg. The awd isnt what you think either, its about 90% Fwd, the AWD only really activates when slippage occurs. Its not a like a A4 torse awd, its actually the VW 4motion AWD. you can buy a haldex controler for a about 900 which turns it into 60 40 like the a4 but the system wasnt designed for that.

If you want a car to take you to point A to point B in style the TT is NOT for you.

If you want a car that you wouldnt mind treating like a cool nephew who comes to town three times a year to some expensive amusement park but have a blast with him everytime, but youll have that feeling whenever you choose then the TT is right for you.

And btw I would learn to work on it yourself to, because if you can fix an audi tt you can fix pretty much any car.

Sound simular to what I just purchased. I paid close to that and had the dealer do a new belt and a few other mechanical items that needed replaced. I love the car so far. I look forward to keeping it for a long time. The one I purchased also had 80K miles on it. But I see these cars at 190K miles and up..

If you were to invest 9K on audi. pay a good german mechanic to do compression test on the engine., perhaps $60-$80? Also make sure they have records on the belt replacment at around 80k and find out if they replace the water pump (plastic impeller) to a water pump with metal impeller.
Check cluster instrument for defects.
Check records for coil pack recall fix etc
Thats all for now

Default I wouldn't...

While the car is fun to drive, I feel the reliability of the vehicle is sad.

There are many issues and annoyances that come along with owning one of these cars. To me it seems many of the parts are cheaply made and thus are prone to failing or breaking. I typically spend about a grand every year on fixing minor and major items (MAF, timing belt, instrument cluster, AC compressor, interior lighting, window motor and frame, license plate light, coil pack, windshield reservoir, battery, hatchback rattle, alien wiper motors, tires, wheel caps, and this year the airbag). All this started about year three of ownership, just after the warranty ended on most items. There have been a few class-action lawsuits because Audi USA won't stand behind their product.

If I was going to drive another Audi/VW I would lease it. Like I said at first, when the car is working, its good looking and fun to drive.
