So, what's so special about G-12 anyway?
What other cars use it? All VAG cars? And why can we only use G-12 and not regular coolant? Something about the way our engines are made?
I'm just asking because I lost about a half gallon of it onto my driveway changing my coolant temp sensor today, and since I can't use regular anti-freeze/coolant, I have to go to the dealer tomorrow to get some G-12. So, it just got me thinking about why it's so special.

(I used to sell VW's) it's a smart replacement for antifreeze...
where as antifreeze tastes like sugar, and is highly toxic, G-12 tastes like crap and is nontoxic. So pets and kids won't eat it, and if they do it won't kill them. Other than that it's just regular engine coolant, although I wouldn't try using anything else in that engine without asking an Audi service wrighter. The system should never go low anyway... if it does it means you have a leak somewhere.

Paul, how long since you'd run the car--
if the system is still pressurized, opening it anywhere including here at the sensor will cause a gusher!
That's why you gotta open the expansion tank first to vent the pressure if the car's been running recently (past few hours). I do it every time, just to be safe.
Be careful that you get all the air bubbles out when you refill... don't want to overheat that puppy!

I believe it has special lubricant additives (beyond regular anti-freeze)...
... long ago I made the mistake of not putting g12 in my VR6 when replacing the water pump. 20k later, bad water pump again. Did it right the second time and I'm at +60k & counting since then.

Generally I fill it up til the expansion tank is full then>>
squeeze alternatively the upper & lower hoses (so you can feel fluid in them), you'll see some bubbles come up in the tank and the level drop, re-fill, repeat, till you can't get it to drop any more.
