It is a squashed beetle. Its a method of cost saving for companies to save on engineering and tooling cost. Its called global platforms. Much cheaper to section a chassis to adjust height, width, and legth. Adjusting how far a robot inserts sheet metal in shear is way cheaper than making a new chassis. The sports car versions usually include extra bracing underneath and on strut towers. Thats why so many new cars now have strut tower bars. Have you seen the CTS-V strut tower bar. You could throw a beer keg at that thing and not damage it. What sucks about just having a strut tower bar is your engine bay has no diagonal support. So its essentially like a square that becomes a parallelogram under heavy loads when viewed from the front. Also, less cost for crash testing and modeling. Thats why so many cars these days look exactly the same.
