Tech help Question - Engine code faults
Here is some background on me and my TT. We go way back. Purchased new in 2000 in CT. It has 233,000 mile on it and until now has been running steady. I have had the some of the usual faults, timing belt, etc and i have posted on the board only minimally in the past about some of them.
This latest one has me stumped. My mechanic has done a vacuum test, inspected the plugs, cleaned the MAF (i have a new one on order) and tracked the 02 sensor outputs. All seems in order. A search of the forum messages indicates the water temp sensor can play up and affect the running performance as well as clogged fuel filter. Here is what is happening. The car's idle becomes unstedy and the engine hunts for a while, almost stalling. Not eveytime but very often. The other thing is that this can happen under driving conditions when the car seems to surge or stutter. Weird and scary the first time it happened (NJ Highway with no place to go!)
The engine fault code that comes up is 1136. Engine Running too rich or too lean. That is pretty broad statement.
I plan on tackling the easy to remedy fixes that I can. (MAF, Fuel filter) that I have read can play a part in this type of error.
Did I miss anything here? Are there any other simple changes? The downside of all of this is there still exists the potential that an easy fix won't work. My mechanic theorizes the valve seats have become worn out after all of these miles and that is what is throwing this engine off kilter.
That is the story. I have in the past appreciated the comments on this board and hope to hear 'from some of the techs on here that know a thing or two about these 1.8 T engines.
Thanks.
