Default Tranny problems

I'm not sure if I am having a tranny problem, but consider the following...
The gear box feels "stringy" for lack of a better word. When shifting, it feels like I have to shift through a lot of resistance.
Second gear will always grind when I ma shifting from first gear unless I am very careful about it. When I am down shifting, this never happens. In order not to grind second gear I have to be very careful and make sure the clutch is depressed to the floor. If the clutch is 95% depressed, 1 time in 4 the gear will grind. I know that Audi's have a high catch point in their clutch, but this can't be right, can it?
Let me know what you think.
Matt

Default Not acceptable. . . .

Matt - You should not be having any problems, be it "notchiness," difficulty placing gear; refusal to go into correct gear; depression of clutch to floor level for certain gears. My car has about 2500 miles on it and shifts very easily and smoothly. It was like that from the get-go. I suggest you return to your dealership. Pete

Matt,
No that is not right. I had the same problem with my TT, and I now have a brand-new transmission. If your dealer needs any help, have them call Paul Miller Audi in Parsippany, NJ, and I imagine they will help them with any questions.

Hi,
two infos on that: except that it´s annoying, it should have no negative effect on the transmission itself, the grind won´t damage the gearbox.
In most cases, the reason is bad or wrong gearbox oil. The dealer should replace it with a less viscous one.

Default When is a problem a problem?

I have been assuming that my tranmission has no problems, but there are still some things it won't do. I can't downshift easily from 70 mph to first or second. The throw just stiffens up and won't let me in. Once the speed is down to 50, then I can slip it in, but I have to watch the slip point on the clutch so I don't red line the engine. I have been assuming this is the way it is supposed to work.
Up-shifting is effortless -- I can do it with just two fingertips on the gearshift ****.
After reading all these messages about transmission problems, I'm not sure what to think. When should the transmission be smooth and easy and when should it be stiff and hard?

Default Re: When is a problem a problem?

Er, why would you want to change into second or first at 70? If you succesfully do this and don't lunch the engine or trans you are very lucky. The reason the trans is reluctant to do this downshift is because of the synchromesh in the gearbox. The idea being that it matches the speed of the car to the engine speed before allowing the change. This may sound strange because the clutch is disengaged, but the input shaft to the gearbox still has to speed up. Now, imagine the rpm required to do 70 in 1st gear! The poor trans has to try to get the input shaft up to say 12,000 rpm before allowing the shift. Now can you see the problem?
I may not have explained this very well but this really is the case.
Regards,
Paul.
